Stainless is great for standing lines, those that do not move. Stainless is much more prone to fatigue from the flexing when it is wrapped on a drum, worked over a sheave (pulley) and/or put under load. The strongest common wire rope is designated "IPS" which stands for "Improved plow steel" and would be my choice for my winch. A properly installed Nico-Press sleave is very close to 100% of the cable strength. For the cost I would have 7/16 cable swedged by a rigging supply house etc. The cost is low when you compare it to buying a 7/16 Nico-press tool and then you know it is done properly.
