When I was driving V-8s from the 50s and 60's with 105:1 compression, I was always at that threshold of preignition. 93 octane gas helped ,but I usually could only get or afford 89 octane, so I adjusted the timing by ear and tried not to push it when it started pinging. I've never noticed my 230 pining, and I rode it pretty hard when it was on the road.
When I used to drive my 360 AMC to the mountains, I adjusted the distributor a bit to compensate for altitude.
