I got it started today after rolling around on the wet ground putting in another starter. I broke the stud off the original when I tried to tighten up a loose connection.
It didn't fix the problem, though. What it ended up being is a loose connection at the firewall. Maybe the loose stud wasn't helping, either, but I had nothing (no crank no lights) after hooking the starter up, so I started tracing the short. I found if I bump the firewall connector with my foot, I have power and it will fire.
Gotta love old wiring.
So I disconnected the battery for now and will figure out a safer way to run the wires into the cab when I get time.
