I used to work in anti-counterfeiting and fuels were our meat/potatoes. So I've learned a few things.
You can add ethanol to crappy gas (what passes for gas today, anyway) and up the octane rating to meet what's posted. After the ethanol pulls in a little moisture (not to phase separation yet) the ethanol burns even more slowly. The gasoline, it's still crap. So, because the ethanol/water is still mixed in, detonation isn't the main issue. But our idle quality suffers noticeably.
Unless you run a drag racer on E-85 here in Texas.
You see, in TX, they have to ship ethanol in. So, even though you're lucky enough to find a station that sells E-85, what you're getting is anything from E-0 to E-something. When you have to get the ~105 octane of E-85, you must (must!) measure what you purchased prior to putting it in the fuel cell.
The company that I once worked for was tasked with providing the E-85 for a science/research-related mileage contest. We shopped all across DFW and found that it was E-0 to E-34. We finally asked the fuel distributor to mix up some especially for the contest.
