Thinking about Greg's question on cleaning brass reminded me of the day when battery cases had a soft top that you could jam a penny into; the idea being to draw the corrosion to the penny rather than to the clamps connected to the terminal posts.
Yes, this was when the radiator tanks were still made of copper and could be polished with steel wool. And black wall tires were all black, so if you wanted raised white letters you had to do it yourself.
