Tom, I used the 1/2" clamp like you show, with my PW's
7/16 cable.
What I did was to put in a Flemish braid to make the splice, and on top of that I wound a single piece of the
steel wire cable strand around it like a barber pole stripe (bringing the whole to about 1/2") before placing the clamp.
Cranked her down with 2' pipe clamp, with Base of nut held in the vice.
While not technically "kosher", I have pulled heavy logs out of the ravine on a local farm with no slip, as well as pulling on trees, etc. In other words, I have loaded it a lot.
I bought a small pamphlet on eBay that showed how to make the Flemish Braid. It was not complicated but wanted to do it correctly.
