i just go back from a machine shop after having my axles examined at a metal supplier and the metal shop said our axles were basically flame hardened(maybe ball peened 4140 and he recommended another alloy that i had posted here before but don t remember it s name
anyway tis a metal that has to be cemented on the outside and stays soft and mallable on the inside so it does not break then heat treated on the outside
but when i showed him the long axle he sorry his oven is only 39 in. long
so he recommend 4140 again
so i took it to the machine shop and he said -----------------no way 4140 will twist into with any real torque you need the other material which they have in stock here
he basically said the other alloy is bullet proof
wonder if there are any longer ovens in gringo land
