Flushing a hydraulic system

As a general thing, what's the best way to replace all the hydraulic fluid? There's no drain on the tank, so I'm thinking disconnect a pump outlet hose and let it pump all the old fluid into a bucket. But will running the pump dry for a little bit hurt anything? Or should I disconnect the return line from the tank and drain that into the bucket? Does it take multiple re-fillings to get things clean? Never done much with hydraulics before except change hoses and top off the fluid.
