My understanding is that changes were made to the big block castings in about 1951, so that the 265 crank and/or rods would clear the bottom of the crankcase. Prior to that, these clearances were not there and had to be machined into the block by anyone wishimg to do such a conversion. I'm told that Chrysler even had a number of these blocks that they had to modify by machining, when they first came out with the 265 engine.
