I was there in pre meth days. The guy with me was on pretty good terms with them and had visited the stills with the guy who met up with us. The petroleum distillate that they made burned without the smoke that wood would make. Made it much easier to hide them.
They did have a small very simple "refinery" to crack their oil. It was quite simple. They took the lights for heating houses and stills, the mediums were used as tractor fuel and the heavies were used for dust control on the roads.
