If any of you live in an area where power outages occur, and you don't want to go to the expense of a transfer switch, we just installed a really cool little device in our service panel. It allows you to feed the panel with a generator of whatever size you happen to have, but in order to do so you must turn off the main breaker in order to turn on a breaker that allows the generator power into the panel. It's overpriced at around $65, but the simplicity makes up for the ripoff price.
You need to install an exterior receptacle with a wire that enters the panel. Plug a cord from the generator into the receptacle, turn off the main and turn on the generator feed breaker and your house is powered up.
