My old VW used to freeze up as soon as the temp and humidity's were just right. You could see the ice build up on the outside and forming on the inside the venture till it covered the fuel hole and stalled the engine. Since I had a after market carb I ran heat ducts up to the carb off the manifold. This blew heat on the carb and solved the problem.
