I pressed the worm off the shaft on my 1949 and replaced it with a shaft that was in better condition. It wasn't difficult, unless you don't have a press, but you can take it to a shop in that case, and I doubt they would charge much. Of course, you would need to find a shaft from another truck. I would think someone here would have a shaft, with or without worm, that they would be willing to part with. Pay extra attention to getting the key in your worm lined up with the keyway in the the new shaft when installing. I messed up a shaft by not being careful enough.
