Not sure if this is proof or not, but I remember seeing a Chrysler flathead 6 in an airport tug, and it had weld beads along the sides of the block, from the front to back, just beneath the head gasket mating surface. I always figured that they must have been there to fill cracks that had occurred due to freezing, but I can't be sure of that. Anyway, I saw that tug a number of times of several years, and it always ran well, and was in active use. Someone did a good welding job.
