I prefer narrower tires in mud and snow, because I believe they will dig through to firm ground, instead of floating on top and either filling with mud or snow or packing the snow and making it into ice. Of course to do that it helps if they are also tall, so you don't get high-centered before reaching the firm stuff, if it's even there. :) They also are a little less inclined to hydroplane on water covered roads. Or course I have zero volumes of technical data that I can show proof of my thoughts. :)
