My experience as far as the shipyard goes, is that stainless is about 4 to 8 times the cost of regular steel. It is possible for the stainless to accumulate a little surface rust as a result of rubbing or banging against anything iron. We still used anti-seize on the threads. I believe the shear strength is superior but I will need to research that part. Its a real mutha to drill through. You are less prone to "rounding off" the heads of bolts.
Also - there are different formulas for stainless. I would not use it for anything on the engine like head bolts or exhaust maniford bolts without further research on heat properties, etc. But for general fasteners, I would think it would work great.
