Hi Galen,
I'm using stainless steel on my Power Wagon restoration ( frame up) Stainless Steel fasteners come in the same grades as regular bolts, so the strength is not an issue. The draw back is the cost. I am using polished stainless, looks like chrome, many speed shops/marine outlets have them, but they are expensive. Some of the larger sizes do not come in polished stainless, but are available in 'reg.' stainless which is slightly less polished. I don't know of any "chemical" reaction, but a lot of restorers use nylon bushings between the stainless and the painted part, just to keep from scrathing the paint. This may seem like overkill for a 4X4 but what they hey, you only live once!
