If it runs better with the timing retarded, I would check to see if the timing mark is right. There are stop tools that fit in the spark plug hole to do this. Once you have verified #1 TDC, set the timing to 36 deg. total with the engine running about 3000 RPM with the vacuum advance disconnected. You may have to adjust 1 or 2 deg + or - to get desired WOT results. If you experience light throttle ping, you may need to play with your vacuum advance a little.
