Can an 11 X 16 tire be mounted to combat
rims, and if so, will this assembly fit in the spare tire/wheel cutout on the drivers side of a WC-54?
Looking at TM 9-808 it seems as though the spare tire mount on my '42 WC-54 has been, "altered" ? Or maybe assembled wrong and allowed to rust in place.
On page 305 & 306 it appears that the stud to which the spare is mounted is a large bolt permanantley affixed to the spare tire bracket. You hang the spare on the little metal lip and secure it with a C-channel plate, a washer and a nut, in that order. The text alludes to a lock, but sadly there is none present in the illustration or on my truck.
On my truck, the C-channel plate is present, as is a large bolt, but they are both loose. So to mount the spare, I have to hang it on the lip, then akign the C-channel plate, and screw the bolt in place.
It screws into the spare tire bracket, but doesn't go in very far. It's almost as if the nut & washer were either welded into place on the backside of the spare tire bracket, between the truck sheet metal and the bracket, or they were allowed to rust in place.
I can feel what seems to be a nut and perhaps a lock-washer on the back side of the bracket, but I can't see it unless I remove the whole assembly.
It looks easy enough to remove the four bolt/nut/washer assemblies that hold the bracket in place, but I'm wondering if anyone else has this arraignment on their truck before I go to the trouble.
In other words, have I got a mistake, a modification, or nothing to worry about when it comes time to hang my spare?
