If the distributor is in the front, it's a big-block (383/400/440); if it's in the back, it's a small-block (318/360). Look on the driver's side of the engine block below the exhaust manifold; there are numbers and letters cast on the side of the block which will tell you the size.
You're probably not getting any voltage to the distributor while holding the key in the crank position, but when you release to the run position, it gets voltage and fires because the engine is spinning. Check your ignition switch.
