You did good on the 60' truck, which would be a 230 L-head for a 2wd truck.I have a 230 from a 1960 D-200 with NP420 tranny all bolted to a smallblock V-8 universal bellhousing.
The other you just said, 49' Desoto. It too is most likely a 230 L-head but a little more info would help.
Your best bet at 300 mi. away would be to get the guy to write down both engine #'s and give them to you so the size can be determined.
