Since you live in a semi arid area and at the higher elevations, the heat and cold will tend to be dryer which is a plus. Back east the humidity in summer and damp winters make the heat and cold much more miserable and requiring more insulation for heating and cooling.
Have you considered a partial underground building. A few years back, a program on cable showed how mixing the local dirt with cement and compacting it inside forms for a sturdy adobe looking wall and reduced cost.
With a well insulated metal roof you'd be cooler in the summer,warmer in the winter
