Gearing certainly will help, and as mentioned above, the least expensive way to re-gear one of these old beasts is with larger tires. Id like to point out that 4.88's are HIGHER gears than 5.88's; the lower the number the higher the ratio, the more direct the relationship between engine rpm and axle rpm becomes. I would not change the gears. Put some big tires on it and go. I have 33" radials on my 69 W300 with same drivetrain and it becomes uncomfortable above 50mph. It is for sale in the photo classifieds, but if it doesnt sell, I am putting on 12.50-37-16.5 Hummer takeoffs to get the speed up and the rpms down. A 318 is plenty of motor for one of these trucks. Standard issue was the slant 6 and they even do fine with bigger tires.
