Winch Question

I have a '61 M37B1 W/W. The last owner apparently wound the winch so tightly that the control lever will not slip into the unwind position. It will slide into the wind position but that doesn't help the gears line up for release. Is there a way to generate some slack in the driveline so I can unwind under power? Can I put a wrench on the driveshaft and pull backwards? I don't want to cut a U-joint but I will if necessary. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks, Hollis
