I was obviously "over-thinking" it. Your guy sounds like the old sawmill electrician who never bothered with a volt-meter. He'd just touch a couple fingers across the wires to see if it was live and said he could tell whether it was 120, 240, 440, or 660 by how it felt. In the old days, doctors checked for diabetes by tasting their patients' urine, too.
