When I was a mere prat, I used to haul construction trash with a big '58 Mack dump truck. 5 speed main, 3 speed aux with a flathead 6 gas. 8 shifts to get to 20mph! The left knee just about blew till I learned to shift sans clutch. Also drove a GMC 9600 diesel with a 5 speed main, 4 speed aux. No clutch up-shifting is easy, but down-shifting is pure art. Before that I had a stock 48 Jeep with a Warn OD that I would split shift, but it was syncro and much easier.
This brings me to an OD idea for FFPWs. NP435 - Novac conversion to a married Dana 18 (has right offset output to rear) with a Warn / Saturn overdrive and you get rid of the divorced drive shaft to boot. OD and syncro split shifting. Perfect gear for whatever at any speed!
