W3 is the start of a 1972-1980 W300 serial number or VIN. The other option is a 1965 1/2 to 1969 Canadian built truck.
The number W300179728 is missing digits, was read wrong, or it isn't a US/Canadian made truck.
1972-1980 US and Canadian production:
W3 = W300
0 = incomplete chassis or motor home or sport utility. Normally a W300 is a 1, 4 or 6.
This next digit would be a letter A-G or X
Digit after that would be a letter A-V with some skipped
Next is 2-9 or A
Next is a letter C-V many skipped
0 doesn't fit anywhere.
179728 = sequential number in this case most likely starting with 100001 or 000001 depending on year and plant made.
1965 1/2 to 1969 Canadian production
W = Power Wagon
3 = 300
0 could be O which is 8 cyl next longest wheel base, but the W300 only came as one wheel base so it should be J
0 can't be right. Should be a 2
Next is 9, J, S, or U
Last is a five digit number like 53211
Either this number is not the serial number/VIN from the truck in question or the number was read wrong or this truck was built in Turkey or some other plant.
Check out the book I wrote at the link below for comprehensive information on 1917-1980 Dodge, Fargo, De Soto, and Plymouth serial numbers on trucks built in the USA, Canada, Australia, and some Mexican production. Also includes 1979-1980 imported Japanese trucks sold as D50 and Arrow as well as military trucks.
