yes that's a good idea. best is to have the shoes arced to fit the drum at a relining shop. they will do it free if your get your shoes done there. I own an arcing machine so do my own. but how you describe is the test fit. ideally on a new shoe you should barely see a slight gap at the ends. arcing machine is traditionally set about .010 smaller than actual drum measurement.
