I would take that with a gran of salt, the trucks being dumped into the lakes. After the road was built, they would still need trucks to maintain it, remember it was a fast built, wooden bridged dirt road.
Over twenty five years ago, I wrote a story on the Alaskan highway for Army Motors magazine. Here in North Carolina I found a WWII Studebaker truck. The truck was on a farm in the western part of the state. On the doors you could still see the Alaska Canada highway symbol.
I was born in Alaska the year it became a state, the Bride and I are going back next year on a cruise. In a weird twist of fate, our cabin number on the ship is my birth day.
