Years ago I owned a 1932 Packard that would stall out when being driven. It wasn't the fuel pump - a previous owner had coated the inside of the gas tank with stuff that was flaking off and being sucked into the fuel pickup.
I eventually had the tank boiled out and when we finally got rid of the coating, the car ran fine.
