I thought the same thing. Use something like oak or hickory. But I think I would glue and clamp 2 1" Boards together to try and keep it from warping. Use waterproof marine grade glue, and several coats of a good clear finish.
Or make a frame of 1x2 tubing with expanded metal welded in the center.
