I know,
20 years as a firefighter/paramedic, I've seen it all, except for justice for the real victims. Stupid is is stupid does. Hauling 5 miles is one thing with a less than safe load. Going further, not so smart. You can't predict what you will encounter, no matter the time of day or night. Arrogance and ignorance is what kills people- "I didn't know" or "I know it won't happen to me," are heard a lot in relation to fatal accidents.
A friend of mine and I used to go pick up and drag rolling antique cars with his 1939 Federal truck. We did it right, with escorts, flags, and point men on walkie talkies to let us know what was going on ahead of us. It was never more than 50 miles from home. And we still ran into problems. Like a guy flashing his lights, pulling around you , jamming his brakes, and stopping right in front of you, then getting out of his car, just to ask you if the car you are dragging is for sale.
I've done stupid and lived through it, in cars, airplanes, motorcycles, boats and parachutes. It doesn't mean I try to repeat my previous success when I learn or know better.
