In 1980 GM had Detroit Diesel design a low cost small truck engine with fuel mileage the main reason.
The 6.2 debuted in the 82 model year.
It was a dog compared to gas engines but over 20mpg in a pickup.
The GM 5.7 Diesel was a converted Old's with heavier internals. Debuting in the
1978 model year.
Both engines suffered heavily from the general public lack of knowledge on how to run and maintain diesels.
The engines got a bad rap as a result.
You don't run diesels without oil changes as some do with a gas motor. The oil get too diluted over a short time and increases failure.
All GM V8 share the same bell housing to block mounting.
