Dan: I bad to remove one of my rear backing plates this year when I rebuilt my front axle. (long story...) As it turns out, they are a real PITA (pain in the a__) but in the long run after a lot of fighting I did exactly what Paul said in album 17. And I didn't read his album until today. I think when they install the rivets at the factory they somehow squeezed them and they expanded in the hole, so drilling a hole in the rivet relieves the pressure and it does come right out. And of course use vice grips to hold the punch!! I used the same trick for removing the dowel pins in the front axle flanges.
