That was very common, and described in all the old-time homestead books. Ideally, you picked a home site that had a good reliable spring near it. That was the most important consideration. Shelter from cold north winds was second most important. View of the surrounding scenery didn't matter at all. Then you'd dig your root cellar into the spring and the flowing water would help keep it cool all summer. Things like dairy products that needed to be kept especially cool could be set right in the water.
