I'll have to look again at my most stock M37 engine. I thought the crankcase breather/fill tube had a one of those little 1/8" steel lines like connect the master cylinder, distributor, gear boxes, etc to the air cleaner as part of the sealed fording system. Makes sense that it would need something larger, though. Still seems like it would suck crankcase fumes but maybe not.
