If that's too big, one thing I've done (with East German Geiger counters that take an unobtainable odd-ball 6 volt battery) is put two CR123 cells in series. If you have any sort of lathe, you can turn a sleeve out of wood or plastic to keep them lined up end to end and fit neatly in a larger housing. CR123s are 3 volt lithium batteries. They are high quality and last a long time.
