Pertronix Ignition?

A long time ago I remember reading a discussion on a pertronix conversion allowing an electronic pickup in the distributer rather than the points. But I don't remember any more. Can anyone tell me how this has worked out, how easy it is to do, what might be involved and possibly some kind of part number for one?
