I finally got my 1946 WDX out of the garage and could check my bed. The wood appears to be original. I have four planks 7 3/4" wide and the two outer planks are 10 3/4" wide. This leaves five 5/16" gaps for the carriage bolts for the steel rub strips to drop through. Each plank is milled down for the rub strip, about 1/2" wide by 1/8" deep. As noted in the forum postings, each of my planks is built up from two or three smaller pieces of tongue and groove oak. The joints do not necessarily run parallel with the edge of the plank. The tongue is very short, only an 1/8" or so. I'm assuming the tougue and groove were glued and then the plank cut to size and the depression on the edge for the rub strip cut with a router. I also have a piece of 1x4 screwed to the bottom across the planks.
