I was trying to get out an old rusted-in phillips head screw and the head was mangled up and full of rust so the screwdriver couldn't get a good grip and it was in a place where I couldn't grab it sideways with vice-grips. Just for the heck of it I tried putting a little dab of coarse valve grinding compound on the end of the screwdriver thinking the grit would dig in between the screwdriver and the screw, and I was amazed how well it worked. The screwdriver grabbed and the screw came right out. Probably all the old-timers already know this trick, but I thought I'd pass it along. I still think somebody should write a large book on all the ways to remove rusted screws.
