You can actually use a large bearing splitter/puller to remove the steering wheel. Be sure to protect the end of the steering shaft and its threads as you set the center screw of the puller. I have a small 1/4 plate of steel with a dimple drilled into it which I place between the end of the steering shaft and the center screw of the puller. The point on the center screw of the puller goes into the dimple on the steel plate.
