Convention is to keep it secret. If sellor wanted you to know, he would have posted it in the ad. A major concept on e-bay is to
'get the most bids'. They reccommend a low minimum and high reserve , I guess they think all those low bidders will stick around and put in a high bid later. Or at least it builds interest in e-bay in general. And you never know, maybe nobody else will EVER outbid you on 'your' item.
