There have been so many it seems, but one-by-one I am working them out before I get serious about tearing the truck down and preping for a final paint job.
In my 56 PW, I have the big Spur gear tranny, case#38711 and PTO. I rebuilt the tranny replacing worn bearings and countershaft with new, and replacing the worn PTO shafts and bearings with new. At 30mph or below everything was fine, quite drivetrain, all you heard was the engine and tires, but above that speed I would get a lot of gear/vibration noise almost to the point of needing ear plugs. I told myself "noway I'm I gonna tolerate this"
Being that the gap between my PTO and brake mount was less than 1/16 of an inch, I thought, could the problem be engine torque was causing the PTO ride against the brake braket, no visable signs?
Well, yesterday I place a piece of rubber between the bracket and PTO, went for a ride and to my amazement, the ride was quite all the way up to 45mph, all I heard was the tires and engine and some some tranny noise coming up the shift lever. What a difference!! Nothing like going down the road and hearing only engine, whine of the tires and wind noise!
Now for the fix. I'm going to look at grinding some off the bracket to give me about 1/8 of an inch clearance as a permanent fix.
Next bug to work out will be the shift lever noise. I can push the lever forward with a little pressure, and the noise will almost disappear. May only require taking the tranny cover loose, and moving the cover back some.
Others with this same problem may want to experiment.
