I'm sure the ballast resistor is the root of your problem but my 73, W200 had the same problem and it turned out to be a vacuum leak at the base of the carb. My truck refused to start if it was above ambient temperature. I bought the truck from a guy who sold it because of the starting problem. After I tightened the nuts holding the carb down, it's been easy to start no matter what the engine temperature.
