brake shoe spring tool

Is there a special tool to get the spring off the brake shoes? I cannot seem to get it off with a pair of pliers. I am afraid I will damage the brake shoes (I'm trying to replace wheel cylinders) Also, any special tips or tricks on replacing wheel cylinders and master cylinder? Thanks
