Some of these things are still dagerous after they are mounted. I just bought some newer wheels that have nice wide lock rings. They are a slight wedge that, as the bead. As the tire pushes uot it also forces the lock ring into the slot, tighter. My old rings simply fit into the slot in the wheel. I considerd these to be time bombs, and was always careful in airing them up. I also told my kids not to stand in front of them.
