I'm planning to put a PTO off of a '53 M37 onto a '62 M37B1. The manuals
and good sources say that the proper PTO idler gear should be installed in
the PTO to match the NP420 transmission in the M37B1. I've also been told
by good sources that the idler gear in the PTO will be "close enough" and
work fine on the NP420 transmission.
My truck sees a far amount of use, and for now the PTO will be driving a
winch. My concern is that using the "close enough" idler gear will cause
excessive wear on the transmission countershaft gear.
Does anyone have any experience/wisdom/insight into this. It would be simpler
to just use the PTO as is instead of trying to locate the proper idler gear.
Thanks for your help.
