Wen you opened the lines and cranked the engine, and got immediate fuel, that shows that the VE Pump was full of fuel ready to go.
If you had a air leak, most likely the VE Pump would be empty and require much more cranking to prime the system, maybe even hand pumping the lift pump. So my money is a problem of some sort with the fuel shut off needle valve/solenoid.
The needle valve in the fuel shut off has a small 9some type) of rubber tip. Its known to break off at times and plug the fuel flow.
Or it can be a failing solenoid or simply a loose connection.
Pull the top off the fuel shut off/solenoid and have a looksee. A problem may show. You can also for a test remove the needle plunger in the fuel shut off solenoid. That totally eliminates it as a problem. HOWEVER, you will then have to use the manual
fuel shut off on the VE pump to stop the engine.
