Our local lake, Lake Pend Oreille drains eventually into the Columbia River. Before all the dams were built, salmon, steelhead, ling, sturgeon, and other fish used to travel freely. The dams blocked the fish from traveling, either into or out of the newly formed lakes. The land-locked Kokanee (Blueback) are an example of this entrapment in Pend Oreille. They have become a major food source for larger fish as well as eagles. In the fall, when they spawn up several of the small creeks that drain into the lake, the eagles are like ornaments on a Christmas tree around the mouths of the creeks, waiting for a meal.
