Most had a cable from the cat head to the anchor mast behind the cab with a leader chain on the end of it to allow some manual adjustment of the angle of the derrick. Some had an additional winch in the utility bed for power adjustment of the derrick.
Operators liked a front mounted derrick better - easier to see. A periscope allows an operator to see the cat head at the top of the derrick to the rear of the truck, but not the hole in the ground that one is digging behind the truck.
Not sure how concerned the average operator was about the condition of the springs once they got into the collectors hands 50 years in the future. ;^)
